What is thickness of cement mortar?, in brickwork cement mortar is used for adhesive material and increasing their strength depends on mortar thickness. Thickness of cement mortar in brickwork is about 0.4″ to 0.5″ (10 to 12 mm) is being used.

More than 0.5″ thickness of mortar cement reduce the strength of brick wall so it might not be used. So we should apply only cement mortar thickness of 0.4″ to 0.5″ in brickwork. More than 0.4″ to 0.5″ and less than decrease the strength of brick wall.

How many bricks required for 9 inch or double/ full brick wall

Brickwork is masonry work produced by a bricklayer, using bricks and mortar ( mixture of cement and sand in fix ratio). Generally cement mortar ratio 1:6 is used for 9 inch & 13.5 inch brickwork and cement sand ratio 1:4 or 1:5 is used for 4.5 inch or 4 inch thick brick wall. Typically, rows of bricks called courses are laid on top of one another to build up a brick wall structure.

How many bricks in a square foot?

How many bricks in a square feet:- in United States, according to US practices modular size of brick is 3 5/8″ × 2 1/4″ × 8″ in respect to their depth, height and length, and 3/8″ is taking for mortar joints.

Calculating the number of bricks per square foot helps to determine how many bricks are needed for the project such as Patio & brick wall and you also need to know square footage of the area where the bricks are needed.

Multiply the length and width such as 8 inches length by 4 inches width, this bricks that will install with their broad face up such as in patio, if the brick will install with their front face was exposed measure the length and the height not the width.

To determine number of bricks per square foot for Patio you do following calculation:-

● Multiply the length and width such as 8 in length by 4 inch wide, 8″ × 4″ = 32 square inch

● As 1 sq ft of Patio converting into sq inches such as 1 sq ft = 12″ × 12″ = 144 sq inches

● Divide 32 sq inches of one brick with mortar for Patio by 144 to get required number of bricks per square feet such as 144/32 = 4.5 nos, therefore you need 4.5 no of bricks per square feet if bricks that will install with their broad face up such as Patio.

To determine number of bricks per square foot for brick wall, bricks that will install with their front face was exposed measure the length and the height not the width.

● Multiply the length and height such as 8 in length by 2.5 inch wide, 8″ × 2.5″ = 20 square inch

● As 1 sq ft of wall converting into sq inches such as 1 sq ft = 12″ × 12″ = 144 sq inches

● Divide 20 sq inches of one brick with mortar for wall by 144 to get required number of bricks per square feet such as 144/20 = approx 7 nos, therefore you need 7 no of bricks per square feet if bricks that will install with their front face up such as wall.

How many bricks in a square foot:-  according to US practices, there are 4.5 nos of modular bricks in a square foot if bricks that will install with their broad faces up such as Patio, in case of wall in which brick will install with their front faces exposed, generally there are 7 nos of modular bricks per square foot needed.

How many bricks in 1 square feet for 9 inch brick wall

*Given:- we have given following measurement

Size of one brick=9″ ×4.5″ ×3″
( according to indian standard size)

Area of brick wall = 1 sq.ft
Thickness of cement mortar=0.5″
Thickness of brick wall=9″

Step of brick calculation per sq. ft

1) first we should add mortar thickness in indian brick size

2)second we calculate volume of brick with mortar

3) third we should calculate volume of brick wall

4) forth we should calculate number brick by dividing brick wall volume by volume of one brick with mortar
5) considering 5 to 10% of wastage

Calculation for how many bricks in 1 square feet

1)We have to add cement mortar thickness that is 0.5″ in each measurement of brick dimension.
Size of one brick with mortar
=9″×4.5″×3″ brick size
=(9″+0.5″)×(4.5″+0.5″)×(3″+0.5″)
=9.5″×5″×3.5″ brick size with mortar

2) volume of one brick with mortar
=9.5″×5″×3.5″ =166.25 cubic inch

3) volume of brick wall
=Area × thickness of brick wall
=1 sq.ft ×9″ (1sq.ft =144 square inch)
= 144″×9″ =1296 cubic inch

4) Number of brick= volume of brick wall/ volume of 1 brick with mortar

Number of brick=1296/166.25 =7.8 nos

5) considering 5 to 10% wastage of brick during transportation and storage

10% wastage brick =0.78 nos

6) get the total number of brick
= 7.8+0.78 = 8.58 nos, rounding it would be 9 bricks

Now another type of bricks calculation to find out how many bricks in 1 square foot and 100 square foot for 9 inch brick wall

Brick calculation per sq ft for 9 inch brick wall

Indian brick size = 9″ × 3″ ×4.5″

Where length of brick = 9″ = 0.75 feet

Width of brick = 4.5″ = 0.375 feet

Depth of brick = 3″ = 0.25 feet

Area of 1 brick = 9″×3″ = 27 square inch

Area of brick in sq ft = 0.75′ × 0.25′ = 0.1875

Given area of brickwork = 1 sq ft

Number of bricks = area of brickwork/area of brick

No. of bricks = 1 sqft/0.1875 = 5.34

Consider 10% space cover by mortar deduct this value in number of bricks

10% of 5.34 = 0.534

Now no. of bricks = 5.34 _ 0.534 = 4.806

Consider 5% wastage of bricks in transportation, storage and doing brickwork so add this value in number of brick

5% of 5.34 = 0.267

No. of bricks = 4.806 + 0.267 = 5.073

5.073 nos bricks present in per square feet (sq ft) for 4.5 inch thick brick wall

In 9 inch brick wall = 5.073 ×2 = 10.146 nos
